What to Do If You Can't Find the Job of Your Dreams?

“If you can’t find the job of your dreams….you might just have to create it.” -Kelly Starrett 2012

I vividly remember Kelly telling me this after helping him out with a course in Honolulu that he was teaching.

We were drinking a cup of coffee, sitting at a beach park and watching some guy with a water jet pack flying above the water like Iron Man.

The jet pack guy also might be a part of why I remember this so well!

He was asking me about what I wanted to do next in the Army, and I laid out what I thought would be my next career moves.

Next stop for me was to compete for a Special Forces group PT spot and after that try and get into a PhD program. I wanted to eventually teach, and the Army would send you to lots of schools if you were willing to sign on for more years of service.

He also asked me about the things that were frustrating in regards to being an Active Duty Officer.

I told him the biggest frustrations were all of the red tape associated with making changes, uncertainty of where we would be living and significant amounts of time away from family.

The military definitely isn’t the most family friendly environment no matter your branch or job.

That’s when he said it…if you can’t find the job of your dreams, you might just have to create it.

He may not even remember telling me this. It was just a very small piece of a conversation, but it’s something that changed my life.

It sounded so simple and yet so impossible.

Can you really create the job of your dreams?

How the hell do you do that?

What if it doesn’t work?

Will I resent myself if I don’t at least try?

This is how it starts of all of us.

It’s like the Matrix.

When Morpheus gives Neo the red pill….he can never see the world the same again.

Kelly red pilled me that day whether he knew it or not.

I hope to red pill as many of you as possible and help you see the world slightly differently.

I want you to see a world where you can live an extraordinary life by building a business that supports your life goals but doesn’t become your life. The work can be so enjoyable it doesn’t even feel like you’re working. We all need to work and need to make money.

If we know we have to do this, why not do it in a way that’s enjoyable and rewards you more for hard work/creativity than general employment?

Why not build the job of your dreams?

Are the employment opportunities for clinicians really that compelling these days?
